Virtual commissioning: the key to success

01/04/2024

The success of many companies today stands and falls with the correct application of virtual commissioning. But many don’t know exactly why this is the case. It is often said that virtual commissioning and simulation are used “because everyone is doing it”. While this is true, companies can take a decisive step forward with the knowledge of what virtual commissioning really brings. Practiced virtual commissioning has so much potential that it has a positive impact on almost all areas of the company. As already described in blog posts, the greatest potential lies in productivity, quality, time and employees.

In order to really quantify the often untapped potential, we conducted a comprehensive study based on a customer example. This customer, a special machine manufacturer with around 700 employees and an annual turnover of 140 million euros, is representative of many companies that could also benefit from the optimal use of virtual commissioning.

To this end, we recorded the figures from various areas such as throughput times, complaint and error rates, KPIs for ongoing projects and personnel costs before using iPhysics.

After an initial assessment, our experts developed a set of rules for the use of simulation, which showed how the company could anchor and live virtual commissioning with iPhysics.

One year after the concept was created and implemented, the same key figures were recorded again and the successes were immediately visible. The savings in the various areas could be precisely quantified.

In a before-and-after comparison, the customer was able to achieve savings of 2.5 million euros. At 2/3 of the total savings, the largest share is attributable to the improvement in employee productivity. The remainder was made up of improvements in quality and on-time delivery.

Overall, real successes were achieved after just one year. In comparison to the immense savings, the costs for virtual commissioning and the additional employee capacities are relatively low. After one year, savings of 1.7 million euros were still achieved despite the initial investment. This corresponds to an ROI of 3 months.
